About this listing
Menara Condong Teluk Intan
What is Menara Condong?
Menara Condong Teluk Intan (the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan) is a historic clock tower situated in the heart of Teluk Intan, Perak, Malaysia. Standing at 25.5 meters tall, the tower's design is heavily influenced by traditional Chinese pagoda architecture.
Though it appears from the outside to be an 8-storey structure due to its exterior balconies, it is actually a 3-storey building inside. It is widely recognized as Malaysia's answer to Italy's Leaning Tower of Pisa.
History:
1885 (Construction): Built under the direction of contractor Leong Choon Chong. It was originally designed to serve a dual purpose: storing water for emergency firefighting during drought seasons and acting as a timekeeper for the town residents.
1889–1895 (The Tilt): A major flood swept through Teluk Intan (then known as Teluk Anson). The combination of the heavy steel water tank at the top and the soft, swampy soil foundation caused the tower to sink unevenly and tilt slightly towards the left.
1894 (Clock Installation): A timekeeping clock brought from London, crafted by JW Benson, was installed near the top of the tower.
World War II: During the Japanese occupation of Malaya (1941–1945), the Japanese military commandeered the tower to serve as a strategic observation post.
Modern Era: The water tank was eventually decommissioned, and the tower was repurposed purely as a tourist landmark, historical exhibition center, and town square centerpiece.
Opening Hours:
Mondays – Fridays: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Saturdays,
Sundays, & Public Holidays: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
(Note: While interior access closes in the late afternoon, the exterior plaza is open until late at night, featuring illuminated light displays around the square.)
Why it is Considered Heritage
Unique Architectural Blend: It represents an uncommon mix of British colonial utilitarian engineering (a municipal water tower/clock tower) executed with Chinese pagoda aesthetics.
Historical Significance: It survived major flooding events and played a strategic surveillance role during World War II.
National Landmark Status: Officially designated as a National Heritage Site (Warisan Kebangsaan) by the Malaysian Department of National Heritage under the National Heritage Act 2005.
Visiting FeesEntry into the tower museum is affordable, with ticket proceeds contributing to site preservation:
